It was recently reported in the Orlando Sentinel that the State of Florida has a very poor record of volunteerism--#45 out of our 50 states. The Winter Park Historical Association wants to be the first to improve that statistic by increasing the number of museum docents at the Winter Park Historical Museum.
The Museum is located in the north end of the historic Farmers Market building, at 200 West New England Avenue. The museum is currently open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Docents generally work one or more two-hour shifts per month. The museum has been praised for its imaginative exhibitions and programming, but the limited hours have become an important issue in state grant applications.
Docents are trained to greet museum visitors, and talk about the current museum exhibitions. A thorough knowledge of Winter Park’s history is not required. Much of the fun in volunteering at the museum is learning more about your own community and meeting new neighbors.
Other volunteer opportunities are also available-working in the archives, planning future museum exhibitions, serving as a board member, or working on our Special Events Committees.
