The Winter Park Historical Association was founded in 1974 in
a community effort to collect, preserve and exhibit materials of local
historical significance. Today, the Association sends newsletters to
over 350 members. Our members are not only Central Florida residents
but also friends and former Winter Parkers now living in other parts
of the United States. Individual, Family, Sustaining and Patron memberships
are available, as well as other categories of membership and gift-giving.
Our long-distance members keep up with local historical issues and events,
and often purchase items from the museum gift shop which have been publicized
in the newsletter. We publish upcoming historical programs and museum
exhibitions. Information about our collections can be found in the Acquisitions
Column. We also occasionally publish excerpts from Oral Histories and
essays.
Our Association endeavors to identify and actively support efforts to
preserve local historic properties. The oral history program is an active
and continuing project. The archives are accessible to all members.
Membership meetings are generally held on second Wednesdays, October
through March, at 2:30 pm at the Winter Park Woman's Club. At each meeting,
a program of unique historical interest is presented. The December meeting
is a festive holiday open house held in an historic Winter Park home
and the May meeting is an annual picnic with a special preview of our
new museum exhibit. Our annual fundraisers, the Peacock Ball and the
Historic Garden Tour, have become two of the most popular events on the
city's calendar.
Visits to historic sites and other unique events are scheduled on an
occasional basis. Docent and other volunteer opportunities allow for
individual interests and experience.
