Winter Park Historical Association fulfills its mission of sharing history with the public in many innovative ways.
The association and history museum offer many year-round educational opportunities for teachers, students, scout groups, as well as child care facilities. We work with educators to tailor activities suited to Florida curriculum and Sunshine State Standards. The WPHA has worked with children and students from kindergarten though college. Tours provide interactive, engaging experiences by which museum visitors can learn about the history of Winter Park. Additionally, many of these tours may be modified to suit the needs of various age groups. Not only can students visit the museum, our Educational Outreach program is a means by which the museum can be brought to students. Museum staff may be invited into the classroom to speak, bringing with them materials from the collection.
Some examples of educational opportunities include (but are not limited
to):
"In Their Own Voices:"
Costumed, trained actors perform a monologue based upon scholarly research
funded by the Florida Humanities Council. A limited number of performances
are available to schools and universities at no cost.
“Building Community:”
Originally created for
second-graders, this tour’s focus is on developing a sense of kinship
amongst the young residents of Winter Park
“Look Up!”
A fascinating walking tour of downtown Winter Park
showcasing the architectural elements of local structures.
“How Did Our Grandparents Live?”
A journey into the lives of
early Winter Park residents, utilizing photographs and artifacts. This
exploration can be used to meet fourth grade general education requirements
or to earn scout badges.
“Hands on History:”
Students don cotton archival gloves and
closely examine artifacts to learn about our past. In this component, students
will also become aware of correct procedures regarding the preservation
and protection of objects of historical significance.
